BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD FINALISTS
Award Description:
This award recognizes a local business or individual that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in support of Old South London’s overall business performance, growth, and innovation. Setting a high standard of excellence in both customer service and community engagement, embodying the entrepreneurial spirit of the area.
Finalist 1: Locomotive Espresso
Kata, Will, and their team have consistently supported every charitable and community initiative presented to them that we know of. Most notably, after the tragic fire at the Black Walnut Café, they collaborated with Sidetrack Café to spearhead efforts that rallied the community, ultimately raising $14,000 ($13,947.29) to support the Black Walnut including donating $1 from each coffee sold on Wednesdays, and Kata creating "Cafes of Old South" posters that were sold, During a period of rebuilding for the business association, they selflessly branded it under the Old South Business Association (OSBA) to foster unity and strengthen the business community. Their actions exemplify generosity and community spirit, demonstrating how businesses can come together to support one another, especially in times of crisis.
Finalist 2: Sidetrack Café
Richie and Mano from the Sidetrack Café have been generous supporters of Old South residents and organizations, regularly donating food, coffee, and financial aid. After the Black Walnut Café tragically burned down, they immediately joined forces with Locomotive Espresso to support their neighboring café, helping to rally the community and raise $14,000 ($13,947.29) in vital funds. They organized an online fundraiser, donated $1 from every coffee sold on Wednesdays, and coordinated a benefit raffle, declaring, “Black Walnut is our closest neighbor in our own industry.” Even as they supported a competing business, they branded their efforts under the Old South Business Association (OSBA) to help revitalize and unite the business community after the pandemic’s challenges. Their actions showcase remarkable solidarity and compassion for those facing hard times, demonstrating the strength of community support.
NOTE: We’re offering an option to vote for both Sidetrack Café and Locomotive Espresso as joint winners, in recognition of their combined efforts to support the Black Walnut.
Finalist 3: Featherfields Bird & Garden
Ashley and her team at Featherfieds been strong supporters for the Old South London community, consistently backing local initiatives and fostering a thriving village atmosphere for both residents and the business community. Their active involvement in events like World Car Free Day, Christmas in the Village, and their contributions to all the Old South Business Association’s efforts highlight their commitment not only to their own success but to the broader success of businesses around them. They spearhead the beloved Christmas Shopping Night, making it a special event for residents and visitors alike. Known for delivering top-notch products and services, they have attained loyal clients who have supported them for years, a testament to the trust and quality they’ve established. The village is fortunate to have a business that not only values its own growth but is deeply passionate about uplifting the entire community. Their love for this neighborhood shines through in every endeavor, bringing people together and supporting others’ achievements.

LOCAL CHAMPION AWARD FINALISTS
Award Description:
This award honors a business or individual who has been an unwavering champion for the Old South business community. Through advocacy, collaboration, or mentorship, they’ve worked tirelessly to promote the success of local businesses and the overall growth of the community.
Finalist 1: Margaret Hopkins
Margaret Hopkins, is well known in the community as a dedicated advocate for the Old South neighborhood in London. Her unwavering commitment to the area is evident through her active involvement in countless initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents and supporting local businesses, constantly volunteering her time and often playing pivotal roles in helping successful events be organized, supporting local businesses tremendously driving patronage to the village and benefiting the local economy. Margaret's works at preserving the historical essence of Old South is evident in her efforts to maintain the character of its buildings and celebrate the area's history. She also champions social causes, including initiatives to assist the unhoused and address food insecurity within the community and is know for keeping the government accountable and advocating for improvements to make Old South a better place for residents and businesses alike.
Finalist 2: Brenden Temblett
Brendan Tremblett, the new owner of the grocery store on Wortley Road, now known as Tremblett’s Independent Grocer, deserves recognition as a local champion for his exceptional commitment to the Old South community. Since taking ownership, Brendan not only has revitalized the store, enhancing the shopping experience with impressive improvements, fantastic sales, and with continued outstanding customer service, his dedication extends beyond the store. Brendan has become a steadfast supporter of community events, frequently offering food sponsorships and resources. His positive, welcoming attitude and willingness to go above and beyond make him a true neighbor and champion for Old South, bringing both pride and support to the community through his actions and spirit.
Finalist 3: Skylar Franke
Skylar Franke has played a critical role in reviving the Old South Business Association after it was disbanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. While her role as city councillor for Old South includes advocating for local businesses, Skylar has gone well above and beyond these responsibilities. She took it upon herself to champion the OSBA’s revival, actively encouraging business owners to participate in the renewal meetings and engaging with them in various ways. Since the very first meeting to reignite the association, Skylar has attended nearly every session, underscoring her dedication to this effort. In addition to her council work, she personally canvassed local businesses, encouraging them to join the reformed association. She spoke with owners directly, distributed information cards, and strengthened membership and participation. Skylar also leveraged her connections to promote OSBA gatherings, both online and in person, even funding social media advertisements to broaden the association’s reach. Her consistent engagement and valuable regular updates from the city reflect her unwavering commitment to the Old South community. Skylar’s leadership has had a lasting impact on the Old South business landscape, making her a deserving candidate for this award..

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD FINALISTS

The People's Choice Award allows the residents and business owners of Old South London to have their say in recognizing the best local business to shop, dine, or experience within the community. What they consider an Old South Gem. This award celebrates a business that goes above and beyond to create an exceptional customer experience, offering outstanding products, services, or dining that truly enriches life in Old South.
Finalist 1: Hyland Cinema
Moira, Ali and their team at Hyland Cinema deserve the People's Choice Award from the Old South Business Awards for preserving one of Old South’s most beloved and historic venues. Hyland Cinema is more than a theater; it’s a cherished piece of the neighborhood’s heritage, offering a unique, nostalgic experience that few places can replicate.
Moira & Ali’s commitment to keeping this treasured spot vibrant is evident through their collaborations with community organizations like OSCO and their active participation with the Old South Business Association. They ensure that the cinema remains connected to the community while maintaining its classic charm and unique atmosphere.
Hyland Cinema is a special part of Old South, standing as a reminder of the neighborhood’s character and history. Moira, Ali & their team’s dedication to its legacy makes it truly deserving of this recognition.
Finalist 2: Old South Pub
The Old South Pub is a loved landmark in Wortley Village, right in the heart of Old South. It’s a spot where locals and visitors feel right at home, drawn in by the delicious food, friendly service, and livley patio. Owners Jeff and Hoag have created more than just a pub; they’ve built a welcoming gathering place that brings the community together in a genuine way. Known for their commitment to Old South, they’re dedicated to supporting local events, feeding volunteers, donating to neighborhood causes, and giving back regularly, making the pub an essential part of the area’s spirit.
Jeff’s dedication extends even further. As a member of the Old South Business Association, he works tirelessly to uplift the entire business community, with a firm belief that when Old South thrives, everyone benefits. His small-town values and genuine passion for community together with Hoag, make the Old South Village Pub a place where people know they’ll always find good food, great company, and a strong sense of belonging
Finalist 3: Idlewyld Inn
The Idlewyld Inn & Spa in Old South London is a cherished historic landmark that has been beautifully revitalized to offer an experience like no other. This stunning building, steeped in history and character, brings together the charm of its German heritage with exceptional modern touches, thanks to remarkable management. The Idlewyld isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a destination that offers high-end dining, elegant gatherings, and a top-notch spa experience—all under one roof.
The Inn has become a favorite for those looking for something truly special, with a level of service that sets the standard. The team at Idlewyld has carefully preserved the building’s unique architectural charm while creating an elevated, luxurious experience for every guest. This place is more than just a venue; it’s a beloved part of Old South’s fabric, a treasure that locals and visitors alike appreciate.
